I'm a third-generation San Diegan, raised in Clairemont. I come from a family with many teachers and school administrators, some of whom ran a very successful charter school. I was proud to follow in their footsteps and to be the highly qualified teacher that my students needed.
When I taught in Escondido during and after the pandemic, I realized that the district leadership didn’t really understand the challenges we were facing in the classroom. I saw money allocated for “nice-to-have” fun activities like after school clubs, but not for the full-time staff students needed to catch up after COVID. The district bought cool 3D computers for an enrichment class, but I couldn't get a reading coach to help a dyslexic student learn a necessary life skill.
I’m running for school board so that I can guide budgeting decisions to directly serve urgent student needs first. Ultimately, my goal is to improve the quality of our schools so that families are clamoring to be in Escondido, and we do that by ensuring all students have foundational skills.
I believe deeply in the power of a free public education for everyone. Our society is better because we purposely prepare each generation to be productive members of our community. This creates the melting pot society of shared values that keeps our streets safe and our economy thriving.
The role of a school board trustee is to ask incisive questions and thoroughly understand the details before making decisions. We will always be balancing different needs and values with a limited budget, so we need board members to get into the details of how the money we spend reflects in the values apparent at our schools. I am continually learning about how trends in technology and education are affecting our students, and what we can do to protect them and help them to love learning. This school board needs members like me who are enthusiastic about understanding how each school is affected by our decisions. I commit to seeking feedback from EUSD parents before making changes.
